Kristy Dowdy, a Freedom Alliance Scholarship recipient, recently graduated from Louisiana Technical College where she studied to be a nurse. “My father always told me to follow my heart and pursue everything with a purpose behind it,” said Kristy when she first applied for a Freedom Alliance scholarship in 2007.

Kristy’s father First Sgt. Robert Dowdy was killed on March 23, 2003 in an ambush near Nassiriya Iraq. After ordering his driver to pick up two soldiers whose vehicles had become immobilized, his Humvee began making its way back to a larger portion of the convoy at a high speed when it was hit by enemy fire and crashed into a disabled tractor trailer; Dowdy died on impact.

He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his actions. Dowdy served 18 years and seven months in the Army. He told his family just days before he was killed that he planned to retire at the end of his 20 year term.

“Freedom Alliance has helped me tremendously,” said Kristy. “Without it, there is no way I would have been able to afford college.”

Kristy and her family also attended the 2010 Freedom Concert in San Diego.
