Weatherford, Okla – March 17, 2022 – A wounded military hero has received a fully customized all-terrain wheelchair on behalf of one of the nation’s premier military support organizations, Freedom Alliance.
U.S. Army Sergeant Thomas Shepard served our country for 10 years and was assigned to a scout platoon when he deployed to Iraq from 2007 to 2008. He graduated from the Army’s elite sniper school and in March 2011, was later assigned to 2/87 infantry sniper section and deployed to Kandahar province, Afghanistan. While on patrol, Thomas stepped on an IED resulting in the loss of his left leg above the knee and major tissue damage to his right leg. He also suffered a TBI, partial amputation of his right index finger and burns to his body.
He is a recipient of both the Combat Infantry Badge and a Purple Heart.
Thomas is limited by the distance he is able to walk. The gift of this fully customized all-terrain wheelchair allows him the opportunity to participate in his favorite pastimes including hunting, fishing and getting out to enjoy nature.
The customized chairs provided by Freedom Alliance are tailored to the needs of each recipient and come equipped with tank-style treads instead of wheels to be able to explore and maneuver rough, uneven or loose terrain like sand and snow.
The customized chair was presented to Thomas by Freedom Alliance President Tom Kilgannon during a ceremony on Thursday, March 17. “We are so grateful to Sergeant Shepard’s service to our country and for his sacrifices in the name of protecting our freedoms. It is an honor and a privilege to present this chair to one of our nation’s heroes,” said Kilgannon.
Freedom Alliance honors and supports veterans and their families in many ways. Recognizing that independence and freedom of mobility are keys to a service member’s successful rehabilitation, Freedom Alliance has provided similar customized chairs to 57 service members nationwide. These donations represent one element of how Freedom Alliance has proven to be a vital component of the military support system.
