Freedom Alliance Program officer Ryan Behm – a retired combat medic – recently led a group of 14 wounded combat veterans on a special weekend of recreational therapy in Sitka, Alaska. It was a time of healing and an opportunity for them to hear how much their sacrifices for our nation are appreciated. The week was filled with fishing and other enjoyable activities. But most importantly, it was a special time for these heroes to bond with others who’ve walked in their footsteps and to find a sense of relaxation far from the hectic pace of routine life.
One of the injured warriors who benefitted from the Sitka fishing trip told us: “It was so great to be able to spend time with other veterans and spend time just for me and not have to worry about the everyday stress of life.”
Our partner in hosting this wonderful event said: “It’s something that can’t be measured by the size of fish caught. To see [the veterans’] smiles … well, it isn’t about us. It’s about saying thank you to them.”
Many thanks to our friends at Vonnie’s Guide Service and all those in Sitka who help us put our injured troops on the road to recovery.
