It was a bittersweet occasion when Freedom Alliance held a dinner for combat vets who had all sacrificed limbs in defense of our country.
Along with family members, the amputees gathered at Black’s Bar and Kitchen in downtown Bethesda, Maryland, to say goodbye to their friends, Josh and Mary, who were, after two years, leaving Walter Reed Military Medical Center and going home.
In the summer of 2012, Josh was deployed with his Marine battalion when he stepped on an explosive and lost both his legs. The recovery was long and hard, but with his wife, Mary, by his side and the support of his fellow Walter Reed friends, Josh has overcome.
Josh and Mary return to their hometown of Bakersfield, California, with a lot of best wishes and affection.
“What a road we have all traveled down together,” Mary wrote after dinner. “So as the road splits and we all start going our separate ways, we will always be bonded together. It is not ‘goodbye’ but ‘see you later’.”
We at Freedom Alliance recognize the triumphant spirit of this warrior and others like him. Josh and Mary, we wish you a safe journey and a smooth transition. At Walter Reed no longer, but we will see you later.
