Each year Rita, and her husband David, a veteran himself, open their home to wounded troops and military couples who need a quiet, serene setting to unwind and rehabilitate. Their lakeside home is the perfect setting because of its beauty, sunshine, and water sports. But more importantly, it is the loving hospitality and the care with which their guests are greeted.
Rita and David host several couples at a time for a weekend of relaxation and enjoyable activities. The couples who attend have experienced the hardships of military life – frequent change of station, multiple deployments, anxiety, uncertainty, injury, and more. The most important part of the weekend is the meaningful conversation and peer mentorship that takes place throughout.
Even members of the community have gotten involved in donating meals and activities for the troops.
A veteran who was hosted by Rita and David said the event “gave me a chance to talk with the other veterans over those several days and hear the different battles that they also fought in and to know I wasn’t alone.”
We are grateful to Rita and David for being such great hosts, but as she always does, Rita gave credit to the troops. “It’s an honor to host America’s heroes in our home,” she said. “They’ve been through so much and made so many sacrifices that it’s the least we can do. And it is such a joy to see how much it means to them.”
