Freedom Alliance easing students’ financial burdens for upcoming school year
DULLES, Va. – June. 26, 2014 – Freedom Alliance, an educational and charitable organization supporting military personnel and their families, has awarded over eight million dollars in scholarships to students whose parent was killed or became permanently disabled in a combat mission or training accident while serving in the U.S. military. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students once per academic year, renewable for a total of four scholarships. Students across the nation are encouraged to apply before July 31st, 2014.
- S. Army Staff Sergeant Stephen Bertolino, was killed in Iraq in November 2003 when gunmen opened fire on his convoy. SSG Bertolino received the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Purple Heart posthumously. To honor his sacrifice, all four of his children will be receiving Freedom Alliance Scholarships to help offset the high cost of their college education.
Tony, Daniel and Karina Bertolino attend Brigham Young University-Idaho, and brother Jason is preparing to graduate from Vista Murrieta High School in California and will be supported by the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund as his brothers and sister have.
“The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund is a reminder to the sons and daughters of American Heroes that our grateful nation will never forget their service,” said Tony. “This scholarship means there are beautiful, charitable individuals in the U.S. who appreciate the sacrifice my father made in Iraq and want to help lighten some of my family’s burdens.”
The Bertolinos join nearly 280 students who are currently receiving college scholarships from Freedom Alliance. Just like the Bertolino siblings, recipients have a parent who has been killed or become permanently disabled in an operational mission or training accident.
In an effort to reach as many qualifying students as possible, Freedom Alliance is now accepting applications throughout the summer for the upcoming 2014-15 academic year.
