SHREVEPORT, La. — Freedom Alliance was honored to present U.S. Army Specialist John “JD” Eichenberger with a new all-terrain wheelchair, helping him regain greater independence and access to the outdoor activities he loves.
JD lost part of his right leg in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion while serving in Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division. In the years since his injury, he has faced ongoing complications related to his amputation, including surgeries, infections, and chronic pain that have often made it difficult to use a prosthetic limb.
“Surgeries and infections and things everywhere,” JD said. “And with the leg as it is, with a lot of sores on there, you end up with staph infections and different ingrown hairs. So it makes it impossible to wear the leg at certain points.”
The all-terrain wheelchair will provide JD with a new level of mobility, allowing him to navigate rough outdoor terrain and participate more fully in the activities that bring him joy. An avid outdoorsman, JD enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.
When asked what he plans to do first with his new wheelchair, his answer was simple but meaningful: take a walk on the beach with his son.
Adaptive equipment like all-terrain wheelchairs can have a life-changing impact for wounded veterans, restoring independence, expanding opportunities for recreation, and improving overall quality of life. Through programs like this, Freedom Alliance remains committed to supporting combat-wounded service members as they continue their journeys beyond injury.
We are proud to stand alongside heroes like JD and grateful for the opportunity to help him pursue new adventures and create lasting memories with those he loves.
