WEST FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) —  A local veteran received the gift of a lifetime today, May 7, after he walked through his brand-new, mortgage-free home.

Cheers rang out as retired U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman, Stuart Fuke, took his first steps to a path of healing. As a combat veteran, he’s seen almost everything. Today, he saw a new future as a resident of West Fargo.

He was gifted a fully-furnished, mortgage-free home through the Freedom Alliance, a non-profit organization committed to honoring and assisting wounded veterans. U.S. Bank and Thomsen Homes also made this gift possible.

Originally from Hawaii, Fuke joined the Navy and faced multiple deployments in Okinawa and Afghanistan. In his first week, his patrol suffered a mass casualty event when an IED detonated, wounding several Marines.

The wounds remain, but so do his family and friends who watched him as he entered this new beginning.

Fuke said, “I can’t believe it’s mine and everything in it. I’m ready to start brand-new again… I’m such a big family guy, even the Marines I served with, they’re my family now. I’m so appreciative and grateful to have them here.”

The Freedom Alliance has gifted 23 homes to military families across the country – a small gift to such big acts of bravery.

Since retiring from the military, Fuke is pursuing a path in the culinary arts field, and looks forward to North Dakota living.
