This May, 14 veterans joined me in Sitka, Alaska, for one of our most memorable fishing retreats yet. From the moment they landed, greeted by the local American Legion, firefighters, Coast Guard, and proud residents, it remains clear this community knows how to show up for our veterans.
We kicked things off with our traditional stop at Ernie’s for a “duck fart” and lunch at Mean Queen before heading to the lodge for gear fitting and a safety brief. That evening, we enjoyed dinner at the Elks Lodge, where I presented a wooden flag in appreciation of their long-time support.
Over three days, we spread across three boats and hauled in halibut, lingcod, and black rockfish, all thanks to Cast Alaska, whose expert captains always take great care of us. King Salmon were elusive this year, so elusive, in fact, that I didn’t catch one for the first time in years. But seeing the rest of the group hit their marks made it all worth it.
Evenings were filled with great meals, heartfelt stories, and a lot of laughter, especially the night we stacked pillows on a sleeping vet during a comedy show.
On our final day, we wrapped with a private dinner at Halibut Point, reflecting on new friendships and unforgettable moments. Sitka continues to be a place of healing and connection, and I’m grateful to be part of it.
